It's unlike me to post a book review. However, my late sister was well known to read and write reviews often. Here's my review of JK Rowling's Casual Vacancy. I promise I won't give away any plot points or anything. I must insist that you read it. Give it time because the first half of the book is a long uphill trek, but it's worth it once you get to the top and start the slide down to the finish.
The Review:
It was a bit slow and tedious at first. Nothing like the Potter series. But it became quite interesting and riveting half way through. JK spend a lot of time, paper and ink on developing the characters. And there were many characters about thirty. However, I hated every main character. The ones that were included but had no banter or real involvement could not be held accountable. Hated. When I said, I HATED the characters, I really, really, really mean I HATED every character. Usually I can find a character or two to relate to and like but not here. Every character is deeply flawed. Prejudice, self-serving and ignorant. That doesn't make it a bad story or not a worthwhile read. I think JK made these characters very flawed so you really couldn't choose sides. And there are two sides to this story and in this town. Also if small town British life is anything like this novel, you can keep it. Give me the big nasty city where I can remain anonymous. This town was as petty as petty can be for any town where everyone knew everyone else's business. I believe JK shows she can write adult novels as well as YA titles. The ending like the beginning was similar. Sort of a circle of life and death thing. This was a really well written piece. When I first heard that this book was being released a few years ago, I put it on my reading list immediately. It's just taken me this long to finally read it. As I was busy and could not dedicate a lot of time to reading, it took me about a month to finish this book. Normally, I would have had this finished in a week. All in all, an okay read. I liked the Harry Potter series better.
