In my 40 years of employment I have worked for many companies. Small Mom and Pops. Large, Ginormous Multi-Nationals. I often heard, though I was never victim of this crime, that people have had lunches stolen from the shared company refrigerator. Not only that, I've heard nightmare stories about ladies reaching into their purses to discover that money (sometimes substantial amounts) was missing. Purses that were secured in a closed drawer in their desks. This had always blown my mind every time I've heard this. I was not raised that way. I was taught that you were to respect other people's property. Also, if caught you would be fired and most likely arrested. Is it really worth it for $20?
First, stealing lunches makes my skin crawl and my tummy do back flips. How can you eat a lunch that wasn't packed for you that may consist of substances that may not agree with your digestive system. People do have dietary requirements and issues. I pity the poor soul who constructed a lunch and had been looking forward to their lunch break to find it disappeared. And maybe, they may not have spare cash to replace it. It's a violation of trust and of the family-oriented atmosphere that most companies try to instill in their employees. And you can never catch the culprit. No one suspects when someone opens a fridge, reaches in and brings out a lunch sack that it may not be theirs they are taking. Unless, you happen to witness the lunch thug in the act of snatching your lunch. NO. That rarely happens. This type of thief is practiced at the old quick lunch snatch and grab. I suppose you could plant a bogus lunch laced with Ex-lax or some other laxative. You might catch the thief by monitoring the frequency of trips someone is taking to the bathroom. That would be creepy and counter productive.
Second, the taking of someone's lunch causes that person possibly to go hungry for the day. You try to work an 8 hour day with your belly grumbling. Have they no consideration? Are they indifferent toward their fellow employee? WTF?? You've committed a crime. You have violated another human being. If you follow the bible, you've broken one of the ten commandments. While walking down a public street if you encountered a homeless person would you kick him? Take the spare change someone dropped in his cup? I should hope not. It would be better to hit up a fellow employee for a loan or donation than to take his/her lunch. Swallow your pride not Griselda's Ham, Turkey, Bacon and Colby Cheese sandwich. Griselda has an unusual palate and a large appetite.
Third, there's a morale issue too. If you can't trust the people you work with how can you feel comfortable coming to work everyday? I know. I worked for companies where this activity was persistent. I kept my valuables close to my desk. On my person if possible. And locked up as much as I could. It's a sad situation. Also, I didn't stay long at those companies. I lacked the confidence in management's decisions reflected by the type of criminal minds they hired. Side note: It still amazes me in these times of terrorists and rampant, unchecked violence that people in parts of this country don't lock their doors too. I keep my doors locked whether I am at home or not. With home invasions on the rise, you can't trust that some punk-ass socio-psychopath won't stroll up your walkway, open your front door, walk in and rob, rape, kill you or all of the above.
Words to the wise. If I ever catch a person stealing my lunch, I will devour you, lunch and all. I'll leave you to define what I mean by devour. It won't be pretty. You just don't mess with a man's food, especially lunch. At work there are few things a worker looks forward to: Coffee Breaks, 5 o'clock and LUNCH!! Have some culture and crawl out of your primordial pool and walk upright. Don't touch!! Respect others' property and space. Rant ended.
